We are 2 girls on a 1 acre, 2 greenhouse-having, organic, biodynamic, diversified vegetable farm.  We love to grow beautiful, delicious and nourishing food for our neighbours and our community. We took stewardship of our little piece of paradise located in Darlington, Prince Edward Island (between Hunter River and Charlottetown) in September 2010 and pretty much before we unpacked our boxes, we built five raised beds in one of our greenhouses and planted some seeds. And thus began Heart Beet Organics...

Now, with a few seasons under our belt we are putting to use more of the many, many lessons we’ve learned and are growing more of the things that did well and less of the things that did not. We now have more of our systems in place for harvesting, post-harvest handling (washing, packing for market, refrigeration, etc.) but we are constantly tweaking and improving upon what we think we know now.

Kalee our energetic boxer/lab mix is bringing us lots of love, laughs & licks; hopefully she’ll leave some veggies in the field for us!  As for new things in the field, last season we added a new taller greenhouse for winter production and got rid of the older greenhouse with the shaky wood foundation. So far the new greenhouse is working out great, we’ve had the most spinach & lettuce going back to the market in March we’ve ever had. The hoop houses, which cover four of our field beds in early spring & late fall for greens and in the summer for our more than 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes are doing an awesome job to allow us to extend our season. We have increased our tomato production again year, since we sell our beautiful tomatoes to many of PEI’s finer restaurants via Plate It.

We have been growing ginger with varying success and are considerably increasing our production this year and are adding turmeric to the list of rhizomes we are growing.

Our goal and philosophy is to leave the land better than we found it.  What that means to us is to give back some of the nourishment, richness, love and subtleness to the earth that sustains us each and every day.
